Sappanwood (in Sanskrit, Pattanga) is a wood that is used to invigorates the blood. Also known as Heartwood or East Indian redwood, it comes from a tree that has both ornamental and medicinal properties.
Slivers of Heartwood are used for making herbal drinking water in Kerala and in Central Java, where it is usually mixed with Ginger, Cinnamon and Cloves. In Kerala, people traditionally drink a pink-coloured water with a deep, woody taste, called Pathimukham.
This medicated drink is made by boiling water with shavings of sappanwood. This plant has many uses. It has antibacterial and anticoagulant properties. he pale pink hue looks great when the water is poured into glasses. Squeeze a bit of lime into it and sweeten it with honey.
Main recommended use: To purify blood and improve skin condition.
